Colouring Book: Gnomes in the Neighbourhood - Autumn Flowers

I didn't take a first shot of this, but still trying to post more work in progress for the Daily Marker 30 Day challenge. I didn't do a ton of colouring every day cos I'm just not feeling well or inspired actually. I really loved this book when it arrived though and I wanted to get in a page as soon as I could.

I left this page for a few days partly cos of sickness and partly cos I started not liking it, but then I set aside some time and remembered where I was going with it and started to like it once I got more filled in.

Finally I finished the page when I brought it with me to my in-laws' house for Thanksgiving. I finished the Copic work and just did the pencil details at their house as well as a few other work in progress pages I did there. Didn't take me too long and I'm happy with how this came out as a nice page for autumn.

Colouring Book: The Witcher - Ciri and Geralt's Contract Kills

Since November is another Daily Marker 30 Day colouring challenge I tried to post a bunch of work in progress photos, but I kind of got annoyed with it so I didn't do a TON of them even though I worked on this very oddly, kind of back and forth between a few things as I figured out exactly what I wanted to do with this page.

Blocking in Geralt and Ciri's colours was simple. I just pulled up some screen shots of Ciri, since it was my first time colouring her, and sorted it out how I wanted. Then I had to try to combine the three reference photos I had as ideas for this into one. Doing the shaky, strange tree branches was easier than I thought just because I just did meds and let the pencil go crazy for me, haha.

I thought since they'd killed (what I assume) several beasts for this image that blood moon would be appropriate. Originally the tree was supposed to look like a skull, or I wanted it to, but they were so in front of the moon it didn't translate so it's just a gnarly tree.

All in all, especially for trying something so new, I'm happy with how this came out. I looked up the monsters that they've killed and though it appears to be a Manticore that's not what they look like in Witcher 2 so... I'm taking artistic license with the colouring since the artist took artistic license in drawing it. But really, he's every right to since he works for the game studio, officially, and sometimes I need to let go of my "realism" issues, lol!

Colouring Book: Mythographic - Mixed Media Deer

I love this book and all the random details, but I have to admit the owl that I did was not my favourite. Not being able to get the look I wanted right off made me frustrated and sad so I picked another page and tried something else. I wanted to know if I could colour a mixed media looking background with Copics and, perhaps, a bit of actual mixed media. I knew that if I used too much actual paint I'd ruin the details so I wanted to focus on as much Copic work as I could.

I ended up marking out the "squares" of green and blue in Copic, filling it in, then taking a stencil and my Tombow Dual Brush markers to do the darker green and blue dots. I didn't want to get any paint or something on my Copic nibs and I knew the tiny nib of the pen would work well for the plastic edges of the stencils. Then I put on some of the new Pentel pastels I got (only $4.44 for 50 colours!) for the white and pink. The rest is Copic and Polychromos, not too different from usual.

I don't usually do close-ups, but this book is so detailed I wanted you to be able to see some of the work I put into this background. All in all I'm happy with it. I got what I was looking to do, and I think the animal still ends up visible and enjoyable as well as the busy background.

Colouring Book: Halloween Special - The Grey Witch

One of my girlfriends lives in England and was kind enough to send me the Colouring Heaven Halloween special because she likes me, haha. I picked this image right away because I liked it and then later thought, hey, I want to make this gal look kinda like Triss Marigold from the Witcher games (she looks different in the books), but in a more traditional world instead of her own. I mostly used Copics for this, because it's one-sided, and the paper is actually kind of nice with Copics. Not great, but still nice, and markers are faster.

Once I finished I think it worked out really well. Her nose got a bit weird, but sometimes you just gotta test things out and see how they'll work. I had a great time with this one and experimenting with underpainting more. I coloured her dress... cloak... thing with a brownish YG91 first, all over, and then came back in with several greens. This gave it a sort of dirty, faded look that I really liked. I also painted out some elements in the background that I wasn't interested in and used Distress Ink to do the smokey look. Below you can see what Triss looks like in Witcher 3, so I kind of only used her features and unnaturally red hair, but I still think it was a cool challenge to bring one witch as inspiration for another witch.
